About Geotag Editor
What Is Geotag Editor?
Geotag Editor is a free, browser-based tool for editing photo metadata. It lets you add or correct GPS coordinates, dates, times, and timezones stored in EXIF data — the hidden information embedded in every image file. Unlike most metadata editors, Geotag Editor runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly. Your photos are never uploaded to a server, which means your images stay private and processing is fast.
The editor is built on ExifTool, the industry-standard library for reading and writing image metadata, compiled to WebAssembly so it can run directly in any modern browser without installing software.
Who Is It For?
Geotag Editor is designed for anyone who needs to fix or add location and date information to their photos:
- Film photographers who scan negatives or prints and need to add location and date metadata that film cameras don't record.
- Travelers who want their photos correctly organized by location in Google Photos, Apple Photos, or other gallery apps.
- Drone pilots who need to correct or add GPS data to aerial images.
- Archivists and historians digitizing old photographs and adding provenance metadata.
- Anyone whose camera recorded the wrong date or timezone and needs to bulk-correct timestamps.
How It Works
When you drop photos into the editor, they stay on your device. The tool reads each file's binary data in the browser, runs ExifTool via WebAssembly to modify EXIF tags, and produces a new file with updated metadata — all without a network round-trip. You pick a location on the map (or type coordinates), set the date and timezone, and download the result. For multiple photos, you can set a time interval so each image gets a sequentially incremented timestamp.
Supported formats include JPEG, PNG, and TIFF. The editor preserves all existing EXIF data and only modifies the fields you change.
Privacy First
Your photos never leave your browser. There is no upload step, no cloud processing, and no server-side storage of your images. The WebAssembly engine processes everything locally. We collect anonymous usage analytics (page views, feature usage) to improve the tool, but we never see, store, or transmit your photos. Read more in our privacy policy.
Open and Free
Geotag Editor is completely free with no watermarks, no file-size limits, and no mandatory sign-up. An optional account unlocks processing statistics so you can track how many photos you've edited over time.
